The Gary Pressley Memorial Scholarship Program
During the mid winter meeting of the NCWSA , November 2007, the subject of the use of funds allocated and raised by Junior Development was discussed and ultimately, the discussion lead to the consensus to create a scholarship program. The initial committee appointed by the board to develop the scholarship program was April Coble Eller, Alan Long, Bob Ross and John Brooks. This committee established the program and application as it exists today.
The NCWSA is currently making available scholarships to high school juniors through college juniors. This program requires the applicant to be an active and in good standing member of the NCWSA. The scholarship funds may be applied to college, university or technical school educational expenses.
The scholarship is designed to be awarded to the individual that is an active skier and active in their respective home and water ski community. The consideration is not focused on tournament scores and the objective is that there be a number of candidates each year that apply for this scholarship. Evaluation will be completed by a set of judges appointed by the NCWSA board, using subjective evaluations of the application and the judges recommendation will be provided to the NCWSA board, the board will make the decision of the winning applicant. Although it is expected that the application will be evaluated based on the information provided, the board may request additional information to complete the decision process.
The application period begins following Nationals and ends April 30th of each year. The winner will be announced each year at the North Carolina State Championship during the banquet, all applicants are encouraged to attend.
The 2009 ski season was the first year applications were accepted and the initial scholarship winners, awarded at the banquet, July 2009, in Welcome, NC, were Leif Abel and Mackenzie McBride, each winner receiving a $500 scholarship.
Questions regarding the program should be directed to the NCWSA president, Johnny Thomas.
